Depends on which license version you buy. For Home and Student 2011 there are two licenses available. The single ( the usual license for most software) provides one install/ user , in other words you put it on one machine. The other license available includes three installs, good if you have more then one machine. Home and Student does not include Outlook. MS Office Home and Business includes Outlook and comes in 1 or 2 license editions. Handy if you have a desktop and laptop. The online Microsoft Store only sells the 3 license (or seat) Home and Student and the 2 seat Home and Business edition. If you don't need Outlook (most average home users don't) then the Home and Student 3 seat edition will fit your needs and is cheaper then the Home and Business 2 seat license.
If you want an alternative try iWork from Apple and get the 'Family Pack" edition, you can install it on all of your machines and it reads and writes to MS office formats, and its cheaper then either version of MS Office 2011 listed above.
Open Office is a free alternative that also works with MS Office formats.
