I have 1 extreme connected to my cable modem and I want a second to wirelessly connect to the 1st to provide ethernet internet access. Will it work?

I have one apple extreme connected to my cable modem on one side of my house. I want to add a second apple extreme to the other side to be able to connect my XBox and my Directv receiver to the internet. Can the second connect these devices to the internet from the first wirelessly?

Yes, this will work just as you want, and expect - the Ethernet ports will remain active while simultaneously extending or bridging the network. You will deeply regret doing anything less and losing flexibility.

  • Yes it would work if you put an Airport Extreme in repeater mode, but I would recommend the Airport Express. The Airport Express will do the same thing just for $79 less. Although, if you need more than one ethernet connection, you could also by an Ethernet switch for about $25 or you could just buy an Airport Extreme.
