How would you use airport extreme + airport express with only one modem?
I want to use an express as an extender upstairs to make my connection to the web faster, could I do that when my modem is already connected to the extreme downstairs?

Yes, since only one modem is allowed per network, and you really want only one network, you will setup the new Express to "extend" your current wireless network. It's easiest to perform the setup in the same room, "Update" the new settings in AirPort Utility, and then relocate the Express to your preferred location.
Remember that the Express will provide the strongest wireless signal by locating it between the Extreme and the computer or other device you want to serve. For example, placing the Express at the farthest corner of the home away from the Extreme will not provide the strongest signal for the area in between.
So that you don't forget to do so, now is the perfect time to open AirPort Utility, select your current Extreme base station, then "Manual Setup," then "AirPort," and then "Wireless" and place a check in the box "Allow this network to be extended" and finally click "Update."
It's also a good time to verify that Software Update has updated you to the latest version of AirPort Utility so that any newly available Firmware Update for the Extreme can be properly installed. Now you'll be all ready for the new Express.
