How does the Nest know if you are in bed and the house is not empty?

It really doesn't - it learns your trends and predicts. If it doesn't get motion for 2 hours it may goto "away" but thats based on trends so that would be more likely to be at 9:00 am opposed to 2:00 am.

If you turn the Nest down before going to bed, then it will learn your habits and program itself. The Auto-Away feature is activated through motion sensors and algorithms. If you teach your Nest your habits in it's learning days, then it programs itself to your schedule. Remember, the Nest's schedule can be adjusted through the App, web, or on the unit itself.
