No, you can use your existing Linksys router. The advantage of the Apple Airport products is that they are beautifully designed, simple to set up, and play well with other Apple products. I've used my MacBook with a Linksys router for several years and have not had any problems.

  • DG - You can use any router. I currently have my MacBook Pro linked through a linksys router and have not had a single problem getting connected.

  • No you do not need an Apple Airport base station. If you have a linksys router and WAP ( Wireless Access Point), you can us the linksys WAP, but will need to configure with a (pc) computer. I can say that the Apple Airport Extreme base station is the way to go if you are setting up a network for the MAC
