Doesn't this Vestax spin dj controller have the exact same controls as the djay3 software has when you open it? Is it worth buying?

Yes, this is a hardware controller that replicates the same functions you can do with the keyboard and trackpad on your Mac. However, spinning the turntables is much easier with the hardware, so if you like to scratch live in your mix or even just want to have better control over cueing, you'll appreciate this. Also, unless you have some other digital sound hardware connected to your Mac, you won't be able to pre-cue songs (listen to one deck through headphones to set the starting point while the other deck plays what your audience hears).

In practice, I have found that if I just want the software to be my DJ and play a mix I've pre-determined (for a party, for example), the software alone works great. This requires that I pre-set beginning and ending cue points ahead of time for best results.

If I don't want to have to pre-set cue points or if I want to be more flexible with requests, I've found the Spin makes life much easier.

  • Yes this is worth buying. When you buy the spin unit, Djay comes for free.
