They should sound pretty excellent right from the start, however the tips become more comfortable and softer after about a month of use in my experience. I've owned a couple of sets of these great earphones (die hard fan!), so I speak from experience of the difference between an older set and a brand new set after warranty replacement from years of extensive use taking their toll.
If they're not sounding excellent, experiment by pushing the earphones deeper in to your ear canal, or less deep, as well as with different sized tips. If you're lacking bass, there probably isn't a good seal - clean hairless ears should solve that. It's also possible to get third party expanding foam tips which may work better for your particular ears (I haven't tried them) from a company called Comply Foam (check out google). If it's still less than excellent, ask an apple store - maybe your set are duds?
Keep in mind that these are not 'HiFi' in that they don't exaggerate bass like most cheap consumer-grade headphones - so they will only accurately reproduce the bass in whatever you're listening to, and will not add any 'boomy' bass.
