    Yes, and no. There is a flaw in Airport Extreme and time capsule units, that does prevent the Airport Extrem/TC to use an internal DNS server first. Neither can it broadcast an alternative dns server (internal mac mini server) to the DHCP clients. Therefore, your clients won't be able to resolve the internal domain served by your Mac Mini server.

    So even though Mac OS X server is supposed to be able to 'automatically configure' the Airport Extreme/TC, it will attempt to configure it in a way that the Airport Extreme doesn't support. And it won't work. So you better get another type of router (for example with dd-wrt) that you can configure correctly, and then add a NAS with Time Machine support (Drobo, Synology).

    Conclusion: As long as you don't want your server to provide an internal DNS domain, the Airport Extreme or TC will do fine. If you want to be able to use all server features (and you should), the Airport Extreme or TC will come short.
