Does the Airport Extreme act as a local DNS?  Can I fix the IP addresses to be assigned to certain MAC addresses?

I have a certain number of devices in my home network that should have known IP addresses, notably VOIP phones and some servers. Additionally, it is helpful if the router can act as a local DNS for those addresses.

Is it possible to preconfigure the IPs to be assigned to specific client mac addresses?
Can Airport Extreme act as a local DNS for those addresses?

I realize that I can configure static IPs for the devices that need fixed addresses, but that alone does not provide the DNS services for those addresses.

  • Yes this can be done. what you need is the mac addresses from the devices you want to setup statically then go into the airport utility, open your airport, click the internet icon, click the dhcp tab. Under dhcp reservations click the + button. enter the mac address and the ip address you would like that device to have. the device should then always receive this ip though dhcp.
