Does one need to always recharge the device? Does it ever run out of power?

The device does need to be recharged periodically depending primarily on the user's settings and how "active" the device is. For example, I have the device set to transmit as frequently as every 10 minutes and the battery has lasted almost one full week. Factors affecting this are network coverage and the "movement" of the device (e.g. it goes into "sleep mode" when it hasn't moved for more than 30 minutes...and will "reawaken" when it does). I've found the battery of the device to work better than advertised.

Each PocketFinder includes both GPS and an embedded SIM card. It connects with the GPS satellite system to get its current speed and location then sends these locates to our server via AT&Ts, and it's roaming affiliates, wireless GSM network. PoketFinders need to be regularly charged we recommend that you charge it every day just like you would a cell phone but if you don't, typical battery life with a child is between 3 and 5 days. On a pet around the clock, typical is 2 days between charges. Full recharge is approx 3 hrs.
