Does ONE have to be connected with a mac in order to record or play? I would like to take it on the road WITHOUT the computer.
I want to be free to record without having to lug a laptop around!

Yes, it needs to be connected. There is no storage on the device, nor processing power to drive it. It's just an interface.

It's not a recording device itself, it's an interface to your laptop to make it easier to record vocals/instruments etc.
I use my iPhone to record when I'm on the road or out and about and have this setup at home when I'm ready to do full demos.

Zoom make portable stereo mic/recorders (like the 4 track H4n which includes amp modeling and more) that act as a USB AD. More complicated to use of course but they get good reviews.
