do you have to plug it into a wall

This device requires power. You can plug it in directly into a wall outlet. You could use an extension cord but I would not recommend that. One thing I recommend is plugging this into an UPS or a plain old surge protector.

It is always good to protect your electronic investments from potential power surges, etc.
