It works for arm circumferences from 9 to 17 in. It is approved by the FDA (clinical tests) and passed the ESH (European Society of Hypertension) protocol.

  • (RN here) BE AWARE !!! Cuff Size is VERY Important to getting an accurate reading. Cuff's that are too BIG or your arm size will read artificially LOW and Cuff's that are too SMALL for your arm size will read artificially HIGH.

Also to get accurate readings, no real physical activity for a reasonable period before taking measurement, arm Relaxed (not tensed) and resting comfortably AT CHEST (Heart) LEVEL. Arm Lower than Heart reading High, arm Higher then Heart read Low and HOLDING your arm up at the right height will give bad readings also. Has to be at Rest and no moving, using, etc during the reading.

Depending on the individual and personally physiology any of these differences can give Slight differences or Really Large differences.

If you REALLY want to make sure you have it dialed in? Take it with you to next Dr appointment. Have Nurse take your BP (With the Stethescope !! NOT one of the machines) a Good Experienced Nurse will get it right and you can then Compare results with your device ...... NOTE ..... you need to give the arm time to return to normal so don't compare Right after the Nurse does it, give it a good FIVE MINUTES before you try. OR you can try the other arm ... BUT some people have different pressures in different arms due either to blockages in the vessels or just differences in physiology.

At the end of the day, some devices are pretty accurate, others? Not so much (With Fresh Batteries speed of pump up and deflation can also affect reading) but even if yours is off a bit, use it for TRENDING vs Actual Numbers. Are you Higher today than yesterday ? or Lower? And that's really the important thing anyway.

    Good luck, hope it helped

  • From the Withings FAQ at

"The Withings blood pressure monitor is available in a single size, which fits all arm circumferences, from 22 to 42 cm."

Their technical specifications list a host of standards compliance tests, and FDA, and EU approval. However, they don't list any specific individuals as recommending the device - medical or otherwise.
