compatible with iMac 5.1?
I would like to add an additional hard drive to store pictures and music would this be compatible since this a earlier 2006 iMac?

Yes it is, you can use either Firewire or USB. I'm not exactly sure which computer you have since there were two different iMacs released in 2006. If you look on the back of the hard drive, there are 2 of the same jacks and a few others that are different. The two that are the same are called FireWire 800, if your computer has one of those on it, use it. You will need the white cable with the black plastic plugs. It does not matter which of the two jacks on the hard drive you use, they do the same thing.
If your computer does not have Firewire 800, if should have Firewire 400. It looks like a USB but one end is more rounded. There's a cable that comes with the hard drive that goes from Firewire 800 to 400. Plug the plastic end into the hard drive and the metal one into the Firewire jack on your computer and it should work.
