You can use it for storing files, it will not increase the space available for backups using Time Machine. Drives attached to the USB port on the Time Capsule will show up as separate drives to connect to, and mount as different icons on your computer.

  • Of course external USB hard drives increase Time Machine capacity. A single 1TB Time Capsule can be used to Time Machine a 500MB MacBook Pro. Connect an additional 1TB USB hard drive to the Time Capsule for each additional 500MB MacBook Pro that will be Time Machined. Backup 50 clients if you wish to.

  • I was under the impression that if I selected the drive (USB connected to my Time Capsule) as the back-up, it would use that drive first and then the Time Capsule. It seems to have worked that way pretty well. I have Data on my Time Capsule and name.sparsebundle on the external drive.

  • As long as it's not formatted in NTFS - I wanted to use an existing usb drive for wireless access (Windows & Mac) but it is formatted in NTFS . Time Capsule finds the drive, but just won't let you access the files on it. Might have been a good thing to include under "Tech Specs" System Requirements for PC users !
