Can you connect two macs to this drive at the same time?

I want this for a family setup, so that both our macs have permanent access to one iPhoto library, one iTunes library, as well as time capsuling each mac separately. Can this be done? Also could each mac run the iTunes Library at the same time (I imagine not)?

  • There are two obvious ways to do this:

    i) connect the drive to one of the Macs and share the disk wirelessly/wired

ii) connect the drive to an airport extreme/time capsule and share the disk wirelessly/wired

Each backup will be done separately. The first one might need you to throw some automount switches. The second works fine for me, except occasionally the airport extreme stops serving the disk and I have to reboot it.

To share the itunes library, you could use Home Sharing from itunes on one of the Macs. This means the host Mac has to be on. You can do the same with iphoto
    (photo sharing).

You could also try setting the itunes/iphoto library to be the same shared disk from both machines, but I don't know whether this would work - there might be some synchronisation problems (e.g. if you add a new item).
