Can we connect the usb cable directly to the apple usb power adapter

This dock is provided with a usb cable. If i mount my iphone on the dock and insert the usb into the apple usb power adapter which came with my iphone. Will it charge? Or is the usb cable only to be used to charge by a laptop?
