Vestax Spin DJ USB Controller
Product No Longer Available
Can this unit 'stand alone', that is can it work just with an amplifier and speakers, like any mixer or does it have to be hooked up to the mac?

Unfortunately, this is not a standalone unit. You will still need to plug it into a Mac/PC for the hardware to work.

The product is a controller. It must be plugged into your mac to control the djay software.

No.
The Vestax Spin does not feature analog audio input, meaning you cannot connect phono devices such as vinyl turntables or even line level audio devices like CD/MP3 players. It is simply a MIDI interface controller used strictly for hands-on control of audio software.- Answered by Alan S from Marietta

No, you always need the Mac running the included software "djay", because that’s where the real mixing takes place. The Spin is just a controller.
