Can this drive be used by two apple mac desktop machines at the same time? i.e. be plugged in by two machines simultaneously?

Via Thunderbolt, only one computer at a time.

When connected to one computer via Thunderbolt, you can then turn on filesharing, and share to other computers on your local network via Ethernet or wifi. Speed of course limited by your network connection.
