Can I use a second Airport Extreme as an access point in the same wireless network?

I have one Airport Extreme as the existing DHCP router for my network. I want to use a second one as an access point for the far side of the network to boost that areas signal strength. Will the 2nd AE play nice working only as a wireless access point when added to this wireless network?

  • They would both be hardwired via Cat 6 to the whole house ethernet network. So the signal should not matter between the two units. I just want to make sure they can coexist in a Primary/Secondary configuration while the secondary unit provides access point coverage to areas beyoend the Primary wireless reach.

I have done this with another brand. You need to turn off the DHCP service in the 2nd router and assign the second router a fixed IP address that is different than the first router.

I am not sure if you can do this with the apple device as I don't own one...yet. Please check their documentation.

  • Short Answer, YES!

Long Answer, it depends on where you put the second Airport Extreme and how good a signal you're getting at that point. It is easy to set up in the Airport Utility to do this although the farther from the main Airport, the less signal your going to get to pass on to other computers.
