can I use a regular HDMI cable to connect to ipad adaptor? does it work with ipad 1?

I have the 30 pin to hdmi connector, do I need to buy this apple cable or any HDMI will work? Is it only compatible with ipad 2 or does ipad 1 work?

    This is a regular HDMI cable, any will work.
