Can I do setup and admin with Windows XP SP2 (NOT SP3). If not, what does SP3 have that SP2 does not have?

I have an old PC running XP Sp2. I want to use it as the base station and use Apple extreme to be a wireless port for other computers in my house. The specs say I need XP SP3. Is that essential? If so, why?

You should upgrade your Windows XP SP2 machine to SP3 anyway. It is free, and includes hundreds of security fixes. Just open Windows Update under programs, and download and install it. It is free.

  • SP3 was a major update to Windows XP, and is a free download through Microsoft update. The security changes alone are far too many to list here.

You'll want to download SP3 for more than just setting up your Airport Extreme.
