For moving to a new Mac, it's really easy to use the Migration Assistant that is included with the Mac OS. The system automatically moves all of your stuff to the new computer, and leaves it intact on the old one.
This is a much simpler approach than moving stuff to an external hard drive. Use the external drive for backups with Time Machine, and for extra storage capacity.

Yes, you can...
I did something similar with my MacBook...
I had the 1TB hard drive because I ran out of space on my MacBook.
Somehow, I had downloaded a virus onto my Mac...
After I got my MacBook fixed, with all of the applications and software upgraded, it had none of my files on it.
Luckily, I had been saving my Documents, Pictures, etc. on the hard drive, and was able to connect them once again to my "new" MacBook.
Technically, if you want simplification, it's like a got brand-new items, but kept them in the same, old box.
