can airport extreme be set up for a remote access to access my external hard-drive when away from home?

I have music which I have put onto my external desktop hard-drive to save space on my macbook and I would love to be able to access that music or files (pictures) when away from home.
I realize there are some ext-hard-drives with this option for remote access, hoping to avoid that direction.

Yes! There are a few things you need to have in order to do so.

First things, obviously, you need the Airport Extreme router and an external hard drive to attach to the back of the router.
**In order to access the files on the hard drive over the internet, you must have also have a MobileMe subscription and a computer running (at least) Mac OS X Leopard (or Snow Leopard). [Windows not compatible]
***Just like a shared computer or iDisk, the external hard drive will appear in the sidebar of your finder if it is setup properly and you are connected to the internet.

When configuring the router, make sure you click the "Manual Setup" button and click the MobileMe button to set up Airport Disk internet access.

That's all there it to it!
