Can a 4870 and 5870 be used together?
I have a Mac Pro 4,1 with an Ati Radeon HD 4870.
I am using two monitors. I would like to upgrade to the 5870, and was wondering if I could keep the 4870 and run one monitor off each, can both cards be used in a Mac Pro at the same time? I do 3D and using two cards should speed up my viewport? Can the 5870 run two monitors at 2560 x1440 and 1900 x 1200 on its own?

Both cards require a dual connection to the fan power controller. Mac Pro has two such connectors and each card wants two so you would have to split the power to the fan which would generate more heat and more power draw. I recommend ATI Radeon HD 5870 in the prime 16-bit slot and add an ATI Radeon HD 5770 in the other 16-bit slot giving you support for six monitors and only ONE power connector need to be split. Better, one ATI Radeon HD 5870 and one GeForce NVidia GT 120 which requires no additional power connector. This gives you up to five monitors (3 using the mini DisplayPorts and 2 using the dual link 30 pin connectors) of any size up to 30-inch HD monitors and downward. Also this combination does not waste a PCIe slot space and with the NVidia GT 120, up to three of these cards can be installed in addition to the ATI Radeon HD 5870. Hope this helps.
