Apple recommend using this on MacBook Pro w Retina display?

I have read in several places that Apple does not recommend using a Palm Rest protector or keyboard protector on the 15" MacBook Pro w Retina. Is this item designed to get around the clearance issues with the display to not cause harm to the display panel?
