Am I right? I CANNOT plug my iPhone 4s into my household's wired stereo system AND send to an Airplay device like this simultaneously?

I think I remember encountering a control window somewhere on my iPhone which seemed to offer an either/or for wired or wireless output connection....

    You are correct. When you tap the AirPlay icon, it gives you a choice to play through either your iPhone/iPad or the AirPlay Device/Speakers.
