Does this cable transmit sound with the updated Macbook Pros?

    This one does transmit audio supposedly, but the monoprice converter does NOT transmit audio, despite what the last person posted.

  • According to KB article TS3065, it depends on the vesa v1.1a compatibility of the miniDP to HDMI cable:

    iMac (Late 2009) and MacBook Pro (Mid 2010) computers supply an audio signal from the Mini-DisplayPort. However, not all Mini-DisplayPort to HDMI adapters support audio out. For this feature, use Mini-DisplayPort to HDMI adapters that conform to the VESA v1.1a DisplayPort Interoperability Guidelines.

  • I double-checked this too. This cable does support audio from the newest (2010) MacBook Pro's. The Monoprice cable that sells for about $9 DOES NOT, but they do have other cables made for the slightly older MacBook models that will work by combining the MiniDisplayPort and audio cables into one HDMI.

  • According to Griffin's website, it does transmit sound with the MacBook Pros announced April 2010.

  • In a word-Yes. I am using this adapter with my 2010 Macbook Pro 13" and a Samsung 46" LCD TV and it works very well. It does pass audio to the TV under OS X 10.6.3, although the update to 10.6.4 appears to have broken it. It works great under 10.6.3 though. The adapter is rather inflexible but connects to the computer securely.

  • I bought this adapter and works with 2010 MBP 13". It passes audio in VLC as well as DVD Player (i played divx and dvd image and both work with sound). Just have to set the output to your tv, it should apear in the sound setting. Mine apears as SONY TV.

  • Actually, Monoprices PID 5969 and PID 6331 will pass audio via the MDP. Both of these are adapters, not cables. PID 5969 will pass 2 channel stereo, while PID 6331 will pass 5.1 Dolby Digital audio. The Monoprice straight MDP to HDMI cables are the ones that do not support audio. Just thought I should clear up a bit of the confusion.

  • For an unequivocal answer to whether you can output audio through the mini DP:

    1. Click on the Apple Icon in the top left corner of the screen.
    2. Click "About this Mac."
    3. Click "More Info."
    4. Click on "Audio (Built In)."

    If you see "HDMI Output or HDMI/DisplayPort Output" then you will be able to pass audio through the MDP over HDMI.

    This connector will transmit sound in this case.

    If not, you will have to use an additional audio cable (headphone 3.5 jack to RCA red and white stereo plugs) running between the headphone output of your Mac to the TV audio input associated with the HDMI port you use.
