I have a black macbook I purchased in 2006. A modified sine wave inverter would not charge the battery, or power the computer otherwise. I see Apple offers a Kensington "regulated" modified sine wave inverter for use with the macbooks. However, my brand name inverter would not work with it, though, to answer your question, it did not harm it. I use a "true" sine wave inverter with no problems to date.
