I have the same machine as you.
Near as I can tell, NOTHING is compatible with our machines except the stupid ATI Radeon 1900.- Answered by MP from Los Angeles

If you have the 2008, 2009 Mac Pro Model identifier Mac Pro 3,1 (2008 Mac Pro) and Mac Pro 4,1 (2009 Mac Pro) you can use this card but if you own a 2006-2007 Mac Pro you can not use the 285 GTX on your Mac Pro
