Is it capable of taking files from the Canon Mark 5D II and converting them so you can edit the files in Final Cut?

  • The video taken by 5DII is already H.264 MOV and no need to convert before importing into FCP or even iMovie'09. I used to do it and don't see any problem.

  • Yes. It's true that an original 5DmkII file can run in FCP. But say you want to edit with compressed files that will go direct to web; can the Elgato Turbo.264 HD Video Encoder be used to compress the Canon's large h.264 files?

The Canon EOS 5D MkII's video is recorded natively in H.264 at circa 38Mbs, that's a higher bit rate than HDV. Final Cut Pro v7 (part of Final Cut Studio v3) will natively handle the Canon's video with no conversion required.

The Elgato Turbo is essentially a convertor from a non H.264 format to an H.264 format or from one H.264 format to another H.264 format.

  • There should be no need to convert those files; they are directly usable in Final Cut Pro. (I don't have that camera, but I downloaded a sample file from Canon and it imported and edited fine in FCP for me.)

  • I personnaly don't use h.264 files directly for editing...
Canon have a plugin on their website to allow Final Cut to "log and transfert" the files to ProRes. So I think you should use it! Just google for "Canon Final Cut Pro plug in"...

It is important to backup your Canon files with all the directory structure and the files as they are on you Card. (The EOS5D100 directory, the DCIM and MISC directory, and also the .thm files.)
