Does this product work with the new MacBook Pro, since there is no longer a firewire 400 port? Is it also compatible with OS 10.6?

Yes Apogee supply a Firewire 800 to 400 cable , as well as the older Firewire 400 to 400 cable , so there is not problem connecting to any current Mac products .
The Duet is compatible with OS 10.6 " Snow Leopard " .
Apogee posted a update for OS 10.6 on Sep09 which also is compatible with 10.5.8 "Leopard" too .- Answered by MH from Sydney

It's advised that the duet be plugged directly into the mac.
The mac should probably be free of any other firewire devices but I think it depends on the hardware.
Specifically for hard drives, it's recommended to use USB 2.0 while using a bus powered device.
but it all depends...- Answered by SR from north hollywood

I discovered that the product claims to work with the 400 to 800 adapter cable, but will it work in a chain with other drives, etc.?
