I want to use my Canon XL1 to capture video directly into Final Cut Pro - is Intensity Pro what I need?

You ought not to need it. Firewire in should do the trick. That said, it's really bad for the head of your xl1 to digitize with it - cameras are for shooting - though if you want to avoid buying a more expensive deck for diging then try getting a cheap mini dv camera at Best Buy for a couple hundred bucks. Easier to handle, lighter on your crowded desk surface, and fine for digitizing.
