Must I have this connector to connect the new nano to my macbook pro?

I would like to buy a new iPod nano. Do I need this connector in order to connect to my macbook pro and sync/charge the new nano, or is there a cable that comes with the device that will have a compatible connection with my macbook?

I don't want to buy extra product, but I don't want to buy a new device that I can't sync because it's not compatible with the computer I have. Please clarify. Thanks.

    Every device comes with a single instance of the correct cable to sync and charge it.

    This standalone cable is only if you want or need more than just the one.
