Only usable with the mentioned products. Apple prevents you from using them in other devices by using firmwares in the superdrive that will not allow it.

No, the Apple USB SuperDrive only works with Macs that do not have built in SuperDrives.

I have a MacBook Pro 2011 that I replaced the Superdrive with a 7200rpm HD and put a 6GB/s SSD in the HD spot. I thought that I could just use a USB Superdrive when I needed to read a DVD; however, it does NOT work with this configuration. I tried it on my iMac 27" i7 with built-in optical drive, and the USB Superdrive did NOT work.
The box stipulates that the USB Superdrive is only "compatible with Mac systems without a built-in optical drive." Even though there are some answer threads here that say it works with their iMac, I would not count on it. Stay clear if you do not have the right Mac as stated in some other threads here: MacBook Pro 2012 with Retina Display, MacBook Air, or other non-optical drive equipped Macs.- Answered by David W from London
