What transfer speeds would I expect using this adapter? Will this convert my firewire drives to thunderbolt speeds?

    With FW400 devices you will get a maximum of 400Mbps (~50 MB/sec), and with FW800 you will get a maximum of 800Mbps (~100 MB/sec). That will be your throughput ceiling, your drives won't be able to take full of advantage of Thunderbolt's speed.

  • I just did a transfer of iPhoto.app from an MB-Air 2012 to MB-Pro mid 2010 equipped with a Samsung SSD 830. Speed varied from a few MB/sec to a max of 60 MB/sec reported by Activity Monitor.
    I know that an application consists of 1000s of small files, so you can't really judge max-speed from my "test" but anyway, it shows that the adapter at least supports 60 MB/sec.
    This was with the MB-Air in target disk mode.
