How does it turn the I pad on and off

A magnet is in the lip of the fold furthest from the hinge. When that magnet comes over the right most edge of the iPad, the iPad senses the magnet and takes action, dimming the screen and executing the lock function if you are set to do so. Very smooth, elegant operation.

I give my case a quick snap of the wrist of the hand that holds my ipad from the right side; flipping the hinged tri fold lid up. The lid unrolls and flips into place and shuts off the screen in a ½ second rotate, expand and close action. A brisk 'snap-flap' action. (the ninja lid :-)
