No. The SmartCover attaches to the iPad2 with built-in magnets that are precisely aligned to meet magnets imbedded into the iPad2 case. The original iPad does not have these magnets imbedded into it's case, and so the cover will not attach or activate the sleep/wake function.

No, the old iPad does not have the magnets to hold it on. Hope this helps.
