Netflix and iTunes movies work fine on my first gen iPad and the adapter.

Absolutely, YES! Have the original Apple iPad playing an .mp4 video on a SONY 40 inch LCD with HDMI hook-up, perfect! The iPad says, "Now Playing On Your Television", hope that debunks the myth doesn't work with the original iPad, after all have an iPhone 4 to which with the original iPad do all the updates to both on my MacBook Pro (Intel) with no problems. Go for it!
