Would I be able to password protect the external hard drive part of it?
I would like to be able to store folders/files in the hard drive part but for them to be secure from other computers on the same network. Is this possible, or does everything stored on there go into a big shared area that all computers on the network can access?

yes, you will be able to password protect files, but i'm not sure if you can protect certain files.
