How does the storage work? I mean, say I have 500GB of information on my computer, when it backs it up, will that only take up 500GB out of the 3TB?

I want to get this for college. But I may get a Macbook Air so I planned on getting an external hard drive. Say I use this to backup my macbook air. Could I also use it as a an external hard drive for things I don't need on my computer?
