I am thinking about purchasing a TC and am tring to see if it will take care of both these things. I currently have an airport express but no backup.

Yes, you can backup multiple Mac's to one TImeCapsule, drive space is the only limitation to how many Mac's you can backup on a TImeCapsule (as far as i'm aware). I've 3 x TimeMachines on one TImeCapsule at the moment.
PS Make certain you archive your TImeCapsule backups from the TimeMachine (when it becomes full) to an external drive.- Answered by Jules J from Paddington
