backup boot *and* external hard drive on Time Capsule?
Is it possible to use Time Machine to back up *both* an internal (boot) drive on a MacBook Pro *and* an attached hard drive (used to keep large digital files).

Yes, you can. I do it on my iMac. Just check the options in Time Machine and make sure your external hard drive isn't listed in the list 'Exclude these items from backup'.
