What kind of ethernet cord do I purchase to connect Time Capsule to my laptop computer? I want to connect through ethernet cord rather than wirelessly

Any Cat 5 or Cat 6 ethernet cable will work. This will give you Gigabit speeds, which allows the backup to run about 200x faster. This is a great idea for your first TC backup - the incremental backups are much smaller and WiFi should be fine.

Time Capsule has Gigabit ethernet ports, so it will will use any cat5e or cat6 UTP cable. If the cable is short enough, even cat5 cable will do (just give it a try).
Note however, that you should not use a crossover ethernet cable, because that will cause the speed to drop to 100 Mbit/s (i.e. fast ethernet).- Answered by J A K M
