Would the Airport Extreme replace my AirPlusXtreme Router?
I simply have an iMac and a Windows 7 HP labtop (until it dies) and simply want to connect to the internet while working on my laptop in another part of the house. So, if I invest in an Airport Extreme can I throw out my current Router?

Answer
Absolutely.
The Airport Extreme will connect directly to your cable modem, and provide you with wired and both 2 and 5ghz WIFI. You will have no need for an additional router.
