The hard drive must be formatted to FAT unless you have Boot Camp or MacDrive installed on Windows. OS X cannot natively write to NTFS partitions. Windows cannot natively read or write to OS Extended (journaled or not) partitions. However, FAT32 is readable and writable by both Windows and OS X.

Looks like you might have to format it with NTFS so you can read and write from a windows or mac PC.
