is this a device that needs CAT6 cable or does Cat 5 suffice? will a slow 10/100 ethernet machine drop performance of network when some are gigabit?

Standard Cat5e cable will work. The only time you will ever reach gigabit speeds is when communicating computer-to-computer. No home ISP is capable of producing gigabit speeds. If you are accessing a device that supports only megabit speeds from a device that supports gigabit, the speed will be that of the slowest, the megabit.

  • In short runs plain Cat5 has no trouble handling a Gigabit ethernet speeds. If I recall correctly the maximum run for twisted pair ethernet is 100 meters or something over 300 feet.
