If I understand your configuration correctly, it sounds as though you have DSL Internet, and use the same "cable" for your phone, based upon the splitter you mentioned.

If this is the case, then your Netgear "wireless router" is also a modem for your DSL connection.

The Apple Airport Extreme (and Express) are NOT DSL modems so will not be the all-in-one solution your Netgear device is. However, you can still use an Apple Airport in your network if you want either with your current configuration, or by obtaining a new modem. If you use your current configuration, you could turn off the wi-fi capabilities of your Netgear router, and use it only as a modem, and connect an Ethernet connector to your new Airport.

There are other means of using an Airport in your configuration as well, such as using an Airport as a wireless extender, or sometimes called a repeater. In this fashion you are using the wireless signal from you Netgear to be sent to your Airport, and your Airport extends or repeats the wireless signal.
