can the Airport express be used to extend an already existing Airport Extreme wireless network?
I would like to be able to wirelessly expand the range of an Airport Extreme router, but without having to spend $79 more than the Airport express.

Yes. Using Airport Utility you can set the Airport Express to Extend an existing wireless network from the "wireless" tab and entering the network name, security type and password.
