As far as Time Machine on my Snow Leopard Mac is concerned, how does this unit with a USB external hard disk attached differ from a Time Capsule?

The difference is, Apple does NOT support Time Machine backups to an AirDisk attached to an Airport. It does seem to work well for some folks, not so well for others, but not at all for still others, so don't depend on it.

  • I have not tried this yet, but am thinking of just this set-up for my own network (right now my Time Machine disk is attached directly to my computer and I have an older airport model as my wireless router). As for as I can tell, there should be very little difference between a disk attached to an airport extreme and the TIme Capsule.. You should be able to mount the USB disk attached to the airport extreme as your time machine disk using the time machine preferences. And as the USB 2.0 connection is faster than the wireless connection, there should be little difference in performance between the two options.
